Fall Release Finn Pinot Noir
2010

Winemaker’s Notes

This new ‘Finn’ bottling is emphatically not an early drinker, but a powerhouse of density and concentration that requires at least 2 years of aging to allow its inherent complexity to even begin to unfold. And while it may be powerful, it’s not big or heavy or overly fruit-driven, but has large scale tannins and high acidity that keep it in balance at all times. What it emphatically does have is that extra dimension of layered intensity, volume and detail to set it apart and make it one of the most articulate wines we’ve ever grown, produced and bottled. It’s important though to distinguish between concentration achieved via late-picking of dehydrating super ripe grapes and that which results from low yielding, precisely tended vines harvested the instant the fruit is mature. The latter has the true density and concentration of the vine along with an inherent freshness. The former is superficial and will come apart and oxidize within a few years. If you like the complex soft mushroomy sweetness that comes as wine gradually matures, you’ll find that here… with time.

Brilliant deep dark red. Layered red and black fruits: cherry, black raspberry then dried herb, earth, anise, an edge of iron. Very serious concentrated wine – packed with mineral extract. Strong soil component, broad dense black fruits. Texture comes out with air, increasingly supple, but then explosive finish. Quite savory – good acid backbone. Drink between 2014 and 2024.
