Special Release Sonoma Coast Mencía
2019

Winemaker’s Notes

Our experimental Mencía project takes a significant qualitative step forward with this second release. This is a compelling young wine and suggests this hyper-local variety of northwestern Spanish origin has an intriguing future in coastal Sonoma. Well-drained sandy soils combined with the ebb and flow of coastal fog and our delicate “cool sunshine” allow the variety to express deep succulent fruit and savory spice while remaining fresh and vivid.

It would be a mistake to try to compare this wine to a known local standard – this very much stands on its own with a unique character that defies juxtaposition. But if you pushed me, I would say it finds a midpoint between Pinot Noir and Syrah. It is notably dark-fruited and broad with moderate acidity and wave upon wave of creamy liqueur-like fruit.

Brilliant purple color in the glass. Expansive aromas and flavors that are deep and pure: fresh violet, cherry liqueur, wild berry preserves, and an edge of exotic spice. A great combination of power and texture with delicacy and aromatic lift. Quite full on the palate with youthful tannins and lingering fruit pastille flavors. Drink between late-2021 and 2026.
