Spring Release Highland Divide Pinot Noir
2017

Winemaker’s Notes

In the winery cellar, we view our Highland Divide Pinot Noir (the evolution of our Russian River Valley Pinot Noir) as a hypothetical blend of our Finn and Estate Pinot bottling; the vineyard plots and barrels that comprise it are in the top tier of our farming and craftsmanship each vintage. We consider this the best value in our portfolio of Pinot Noir bottling, our blended translation of the soils and climate in the prime section of the Green Valley as we leave the valley heading west into the coastal mountains.

Our two classic Estate parcels, our finest sources, comprise the majority of the blend. O'Connell on shallow marine sedimentary soils provides the thrust of the wine: aromatic lift, intense perfume and vibrant structure. Our Upper Estate on clay/loam soils is darker, deep in fruit and density: the rich core of the wine. A small parcel of Swan clone at the high-elevation neighboring Jentoft Vineyard adds succulence, texture and depth.

True to the wine's coastal origins, bright, effusive aromas of Bing cherry, rose petal, wild berries and graphite leap from the glass. In the style of the vintage, dark fruits predominate, and the wine is broad across the palate with beautiful purity and a balance of fruit, savory and structural elements. Vibrant acidity lends dimension and length. Drink this wine soon after release for its pinpoint focus and fruit intensity, or age it for seven to 10 years for heightened richness and softer texture. A really thrilling 2017 Pinot Noir.
