Fall Release Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
2012

Winemaker’s Notes

This wine is all about the fruit. There are layers and layers of seductive red and black fruits that constantly change, merge and develop so that each time you return to the glass, there’s something new to discover. As the wine opens in the glass, the bright red elements give way to darker cassis and earthier notes. It has a lacy, lilting texture, not too soft and round, always focused and supple — uplifting and fresh. There are complex sandalwood elements, not barrel derived, but representative of this cool, mellow growing season and the fruit’s success in retaining all its aromatic range through ripening. With time it becomes deep and resonant on the palette, broad and textural, but the supple tannins and lively acidity keep it dynamic and mouthwatering. It’s even better from a recorked bottling on the second night, which is a good indicator it can age and become more complex in bottle for a good number of years. Eight to ten would be a good estimate. It most reminds me of our 2005 RRV Pinot, which is becoming even more beautiful as time passes.

Brilliant in the glass. Lovely purity of Russian River Pinot aromas: juicy black cherry, black raspberry, sassafras, and rosehip. As it opens cassis and smoke then savory fennel emerge. Layered bright red fruits on palate then broad and chewy with real depth of flavor and deep resonant texture. Firms up with air to a lingering mouthwatering savory finish. Drink between late-2013 and 2020.
