Fall Release GVR Estate Vineyard Jack Robert's Run Syrah
2012

Winemaker’s Notes

Another returning designate bottling, not seen since 2009, because we preferred to add these grapes to the RRV bottling. There are a number of unique elements to the wine’s return. Firstly, it’s re-designated to the Sonoma Coast appellation, to better reflect the vineyard’s location and the wine’s stylistic leaning. Secondly, we co-fermented 8% Viognier along with the Syrah, a traditional Northern Rhone technique, which adds subtle hi-tone nuances to the aromatic profile and some textural qualities. And finally, the wine is completely distinct compared to our other two Syrah bottlings. Not only that, but the quality is superb! There’s a certain ‘Pinosity’ to the wine – it’s Syrah grown in a Pinot-dominated district, on shallow sandy soils. But more than that – the wine’s subtle, lilting palate, elegant frame and overall driving focus means it’s full of nuance and intrigue, like our finest Pinots, and not just a simple fruit-filled blockbuster. The wine should age spectacularly as it has so much natural balance, concentration and persistence. It’s a sure winner for a decade’s cellaring.

Floral lilies, black and blue fruits, licorice and allspice – sharply focused and very pure. Fresh sweet herbal quality, a little forest floor, evergreen edge. White and black pepper adds lift. Highly detailed wine, lots of swirling nuance. Blackberry, soy, dark bitter chocolate, good drive and power to the palate. Youthful finish, quite tightly-wound with lots of cut to the wine. Apple skin acidity and lingering orange zestiness. Decant in its youth and drink between 2015 and 2025.
