Fall Release Lia Viognier
2007

Winemaker’s Notes

A sneak preview of the spectacular 2007 vintage comes with the early release of our Lia Viognier. This is unquestionably our finest bottling of this variety and a wine for which we have a great amount of passion, which we hope you find infectious. The two vineyards compliment one another perfectly and offer a deft combination of richness and acidity, power and length. The aromatics, which leap out the glass, are both delicately floral and richly fruited in a pure dynamic style free of the trappings of toasty new oak or clumsy over-maturity. Most critically, both these vineyards retain lively acidity even at full harvest maturity and after complete malolactic fermentation. This ensures that palate length is uncommonly fine and allows the full array of shimmering flavors to set the senses alight. The winemaking is patient and uncomplicated: exceptional fruit, sensitive handling and late-bottling after sufficient time on the lees to build texture and extend elegance, yet not so much as to sacrifice freshness. The result is not a blockbuster style but one that rides the line of richness without ever succumbing to the pitfalls of excess that tire or overwhelm the palate.

Pale gold color. Effusive floral aromatics highlight honeysuckle, exotic lychee, citrus oil and richer quince notes. The palate follows the nose before ripe nectarine and honeyed apricot flavors take control. Maintains a constant sense of stony definition and supportive acidity throughout. Finishes long, richly fruity yet elegant with a suggestion of dried flowers. As with all our whites, serve at no cooler than 52 degrees to allow full flavor development. Best drunk within four years of release.
